ANNOUNCEMENTS

October 7 (Tuesday)

Last Child in the Woods, presentation by the author, Richard Louv, at the Springfield Expo Center, 635 St. Louis Street, Springfield, MO, 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm. From 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm (before and after the presentation), there will be ongoing nature activities and information from local environmental/conservation groups.  From 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm, there will be book signing by the author.  Books will be available to purchase.  For more information, call 417-864-2005 or e-mail: blucks@cispringfield.mmo.us

 

Surveys of the membership will be sent out on or near October 10th.  They need to be back by October 24th so that the chapter can discuss the results at the November meeting.

 

"Show Me Yards and Neighborhoods"

A training program offered through the Extension Office teaches the public to be good stewards.  For more information, contact Carol Mahan at 573-368-2590 ext. 29 or e-mail: carol.mahan@mdc.mo.gov

"Healthy Yards for Clean Streams" is the new name for this program.  The training for trainers will be held on November 20 and 21.  For more information, contact Susan Wrasmann or Carol Mahan.

 

Christmas Social

There will be no regular meeting in December.  Members are invited to a social at the home of Janet McKean, 618 Salem Ave., Rolla, from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm.  Attendees are asked to bring an appetizer to share and drink of choice.  Mulled wine and mulled cider will be available.  Please RSVP to Janet at 573-364-7809 or e-mail: jmckean@fidnet.com

 

   

 

ADVANCED TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

 

October 27 (Monday)

At the regular monthly meeting of the chapter, Dr. Joe Senne will present a program on Astronomy.  This will count towards 1-hour of advanced training.  For more information, contact Emily Brown at nature97@socket.net or Gary Morford at morfordg@mst.edu

 

November 12 (Wednesday)

Dr. Richard Edging will provide a presentation and workshop on Ozark Archeology from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm at the Phelps County Courthouse Multipurpose Room.  We need a minimum of 10 members in order to have the workshop.  To register, please contact Emily Brown at 573-762-2727 or e-mail: nature97@socket.net

Training workshop for "Healthy yards for Clean Streams" program.  Details to follow.

 

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

October 20-23 (Monday - Thursday)

Ecology Days for Sixth Graders, Bray Conservation Area, 8:30 am - 2:00 pm.

Four stations: Mammals, Aquatics, Tree Hike, Stream Table

One to two volunteers are needed each day.  Wear a watch and bring a water bottle.  Lunch will be provided.  For more information or to volunteer, call Connie Schmiedeskamp or Carol Mahan at 573-368-2225..

 

OCTOBER EVENTS

October 7 (Tuesday)

October 10 and 11 (Friday and Saturday)

Hamilton's Seeds "Prairie Days," in conjunction with Missouri Prairie Foundation's annual meeting.  Includes tours of the property as well as seed processing barn.

Program begins at 2:00 pm on Friday and ends that day with a potluck dinner.  Saturday includes a free breakfast, lunch, and dinner (bison steaks) provided by the Hamiltons.  Saturday morning program consists of the board meeting and selection of officers.  In the afternoon, the tours include the seed barn, a savanna restoration project and Ozark prairie and wildflower production fields.  For more information or to RSVP, call Hamiltons at 417-967-2190 by October 10th. 

 

October 20 - 23 (Monday-Thursday)

Ecology Days at Bray Conservation Area for sixth graders.  See Announcements for details.

 

October 21 (Tuesday)

Stream Team - Dry Fork Creek in Phelps County - meets.  Details to follow.

 

October 27 (Monday)

Regular monthly meeting of the chapter, United Methodist Church, Rolla, 6:00 pm.
